Washington Dangerous Waste · Persistence Criteria
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon persistent dangerous waste, extremely hazardous waste category (PAH >= 1%)
Designation
Extremely Hazardous Waste
Waste Number
WP03
Regulation
WAC 173-303-104
Halogenated organic compounds (HOC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) that resist degradation. HOC at 1% or more designates EHW (WP01), 0.01% to 1% designates DW (WP02); PAH at 1% or more designates EHW (WP03). WAC 173-303-100(6).
WP03 is a state-only designation — the stream may carry federal RCRA codes in addition, or be dangerous waste in Washington alone.
Recognized recovery routes for this waste family, ranked by typical recovery tier. Which route fits depends on your specific stream — composition, volume and region.
Halogenated organic and PAH persistence wastes route to combustion-based destruction at permitted units equipped for halogenated streams; persistence is why milder routes fail.
40 CFR 268.40 — LDR treatment standardsStreams with meaningful fuel value may qualify for burning for energy recovery, tightly constrained by halogen content limits at the receiving furnace.
40 CFR Part 266 Subpart H — burning for energy recoveryThese are the typical routes for persistence criteria. Your stream's actual options depend on its composition and where it sits.
